Horizon Forbidden West runs at 30 FPS in Favor Resolution and 60 FPS in Favor Performance on PS5, with a 40 FPS Balanced option for 120 Hz displays. For a detailed exploration stream, choose Favor Resolution at 30 FPS. PlayRoam Pro can show it with 60 FPS motion on any 60 Hz screen, while Aloy's inputs and the game stay at 30 FPS.
The PS5 modes after the early patches
These figures come from Digital Foundry's PS5 Pro analysis, which also describes the patched base PS5 modes, and patch 1.17 notes reproduced by GameSpot.
Favor Resolution gives you a native 4K picture at 30 FPS. Favor Performance uses dynamic checkerboard rendering around 1800p at 60 FPS. Its image quality improved in summer 2022, so launch comparisons aren't the whole story. Resolution remains slightly sharper, with better screen-space reflections, but Performance is much easier to recommend for frequent fights.
Patch 1.17 added Balanced at 40 FPS and support for VRR and high frame rates. Balanced requires a console display that accepts 120 Hz. The patch notes do not state its rendering resolution. With HFR and VRR, Performance has a 60-120 FPS target range; that is not a locked 120 FPS promise.
Complete Edition arrived on PS5 on October 6, 2023. It packages the main game with Burning Shores, including the Los Angeles archipelago. You aren't choosing between a separate Complete Edition graphics system and the patched original game.
PS5 Pro has a different trade-off
Performance Pro keeps 60 FPS and reconstructs a 4K picture from roughly 1440p. Guerrilla uses its own temporal upscaler, not PSSR. Digital Foundry found clearer foliage and better image stability, with improvements to screen-space reflections and depth of field.
Resolution Pro retains native 4K at 30 FPS with updated anti-aliasing. Balanced Pro runs at 40 FPS on 120 Hz output, with settings between the other Pro modes. Performance Pro can also unlock with 120 Hz and VRR; Digital Foundry saw it reach the 70s but occasionally drop below 60.
For streaming from a Pro, Performance Pro at a capped 60 FPS is my pick. It avoids the base console's larger image-quality trade-off. Its cleaner picture can help the stream, though Remote Play still sends at most 1080p60, without HDR.
Resolution for the view, Performance for the shot
Try Resolution for crossing open ground or taking in the Burning Shores coastline. Frame generation inserts one frame between each pair received, so your 30 FPS stream displays 30 → 60 FPS motion. It does not give you Performance mode's input response. The added delay is about 17 ms plus processing, shown in Added delay.
When you want a cleaner shot at a machine's component, switch to Favor Performance and a 60 FPS stream. Compare it without generation first. On a 120 Hz or faster screen, Pro can display that stream as 60 → 120 FPS motion, with about 8 ms plus processing added. See PS5 frame generation explained for the difference between generated motion and real frames.
Leave Balanced and unlocked VRR modes for the TV connected to your console. Forty frames do not divide evenly into a 30 or 60 FPS stream. A locked mode gives the generator a steadier input. God of War Ragnarök's mode guide covers a similar 40 FPS choice.
Windows settings for a Resolution stream
Select Favor Resolution in the game, rather than Balanced. Choose Source → Local network at home, then Resolution 1080p and Frame rate 30 FPS in PlayRoam. Local streaming is free with an account. Internet streaming uses Source → Over the internet, requires Pro and works on PS5 only.
In the Picture tab, select FPS boost → 2× FSR. This Pro feature works on any DirectX 11 graphics card; the output card should read 30 → 60 FPS. For a 1440p or 4K monitor, try Upscaling → FSR 1. It sharpens the received image rather than recovering the original 4K detail. If you choose Performance instead, change Frame rate to 60 FPS.
Aloy on a phone screen
Android needs Pro and a Vulkan 1.3 graphics chip for 30 → 60 generation. On a 120 Hz phone, a 60 FPS Performance stream can also try 60 → 120. If the app says your phone cannot keep up, Resolution streamed at 30 FPS gives the reliable 30 → 60 option.
Any gamepad Android recognises works; you can also edit touch controls. Read Android frame generation before selecting a phone for this setup. Fit keeps the whole picture visible; use it if Fill cuts into the combat HUD.
Questions and answers
Is Horizon Forbidden West 60 FPS on PS5?
Yes. Favor Performance targets 60 FPS with dynamic checkerboard rendering around 1800p. Favor Resolution runs at 30 FPS with a native 4K picture.
What is Balanced mode in Horizon Forbidden West?
Patch 1.17 added a 40 FPS Balanced mode for displays that support 120 Hz output. It is a console display option, not a 40 FPS Remote Play stream.
Which Horizon Forbidden West mode should I stream?
Try Favor Resolution with a 30 FPS stream and PlayRoam Pro frame generation for 60 FPS motion. Choose Favor Performance at 60 FPS instead if aiming response matters more to you.
Does Horizon Forbidden West use PSSR on PS5 Pro?
No. Guerrilla uses its own temporal upscaler. Performance Pro renders around 1440p and reconstructs a 4K picture at 60 FPS. Remote Play still tops out at 1080p60.
