PS5 Remote Play in 1440p and beyond

Updated October 3, 2026 · 2 min read

PS5 Remote Play streams at 1080p at most. There's no hidden 1440p or 4K setting, in the official app or anywhere else, because the console decides what it encodes. You still have two ways to get a sharp 1440p or 4K picture of your PS5 on a PC: upscale the 1080p stream or capture the console's HDMI output.

Why Remote Play stops at 1080p

During Remote Play the PS5 encodes a separate video stream in real time, next to the picture it sends to your TV. Sony offers 360p, 540p, 720p and 1080p for that stream. A higher resolution would need more encoding work on the console and more bandwidth on your network, so it simply isn't offered.

Option 1: upscale the stream on your PC

PlayRoam receives the 1080p stream and upscales it on your graphics card to your monitor's resolution: ×1.33 for 1440p, ×2 for 4K. AI upscaling rebuilds edges and text instead of stretching pixels, so the result looks far closer to native than a stretched stream. It works on your home network and over the internet.

Option 2: capture the HDMI output

A capture card receives exactly what the console sends to a TV, with no stream compression. With a card that accepts 1440p or 4K, you see the console's native picture. PlayRoam's Capture card mode shows that feed and can still apply upscaling and frame generation on top.

The trade-offs: the console has to sit next to the PC, you need to turn off HDCP on the PS5, and the card adds its own small delay. See upscale any console through a capture card.

For most people the upscaled stream is the easy win: no extra hardware, and the console can stay under the TV. If the PS5 already sits on your desk, a capture card gives the cleanest picture.

Frequently asked questions

Can PS5 Remote Play stream in 1440p?

No. PS5 Remote Play offers 360p, 540p, 720p and 1080p. Neither the official app nor third-party Remote Play clients can request a higher resolution from the console.

Can the PS5 output 1440p over HDMI?

Yes. Since a 2022 system update the PS5 can output 1440p to compatible displays, and a capture card that accepts 1440p can record it.

Which is better, upscaling or a capture card?

A capture card gives the cleanest picture because there's no stream compression, but it needs the console next to the PC. Upscaling works over your network and over the internet.
