PS5 Remote Play on PC with DLSS-style upscaling

Updated October 3, 2026 · 2 min read

PS5 Remote Play tops out at 1080p. On a 1080p screen that's fine; on a 1440p or 4K monitor the picture is stretched, so edges look soft and small text gets fuzzy. PlayRoam receives the same stream and runs DLSS-style upscaling on your graphics card, rebuilding a sharper image at your monitor's native resolution.

Why Remote Play looks soft on a big monitor

Remote Play doesn't send the console's HDMI picture. The PS5 encodes a fresh video stream in real time, at a resolution you choose up to 1080p, and compresses it to fit your network. Two things then cost sharpness on a high-resolution monitor:

  • Simple stretching. A 1080p frame shown on a 1440p panel has to be scaled by 1.33×, and on 4K by 2×. Basic scaling blurs every edge it touches.
  • Compression. The encoder throws away fine detail first: distant foliage, thin wires, small UI text.

What DLSS-style upscaling does differently

Instead of stretching pixels, an AI upscaler reconstructs the higher-resolution image. It recognizes edges, text and textures in the 1080p frame and redraws them crisply at the target resolution. The result is closer to a native 1440p picture than to a blown-up 1080p one, especially in HUD text, subtitles and distant geometry.

It can't invent detail the stream never carried. If the network forces the console down to a low bitrate, you'll still see compression artifacts. Upscaling helps most when the stream itself is clean.

How to set it up

  1. On the PS5, turn on Settings → System → Remote Play → Enable Remote Play.
  2. Connect the PS5 to your router with Ethernet. A clean, high-bitrate stream gives the upscaler the most to work with.
  3. Install PlayRoam, sign in and choose Local network, then pick your console.
  4. Set the stream to 1080p, the highest Remote Play allows.
  5. Check the output panel. It shows the source and the result, for example 1440p from 1080p · ×1.33 on a 1440p monitor.
  6. Press Start.

What to expect at each monitor resolution

MonitorScale from 1080pWhat improves most
1080p×1Nothing to upscale; frame generation still helps
1440p×1.33Edges, HUD and subtitles look native
4K×2Biggest gain over a stretched stream

Tips for the sharpest picture

  • Wire the console. Wi-Fi on the PS5 side is the most common reason for a low-bitrate stream.
  • Keep the stream at 1080p. Upscaling from 720p works, but starting from more pixels always looks better.
  • Combine with frame generation. Many good-looking console modes run at 30 FPS. Frame generation makes them move at 60 FPS on your monitor.

Frequently asked questions

Does PS5 Remote Play support DLSS?

No. The official PS Remote Play app shows the stream at the resolution it receives and stretches it to the window. PlayRoam adds DLSS-style upscaling on your PC.

What is the highest resolution for PS5 Remote Play?

1080p. You can choose 360p, 540p, 720p or 1080p; there is no 1440p or 4K option for Remote Play.

Can upscaling fix a blocky, low-bitrate stream?

Only partly. Upscaling rebuilds edges and fine detail, but heavy compression blocks come from the network. Use a wired connection so the console can stream at full quality.

Which graphics card do I need?

A dedicated graphics card. See the system requirements on the download page for supported models.
