GTA 5 PS5 frame rates: keep Performance RT for driving

GTA 5's PS5 version runs at 30 FPS in Fidelity or targets 60 FPS in Performance and Performance RT. Choose Performance RT for driving: you keep 60 FPS game response and ray-traced shadows. Stream at 60 FPS with PlayRoam, then use Pro frame generation for 60 → 120 FPS motion if your monitor or phone has a 120 Hz or faster screen. A 60 Hz screen cannot show that 120 FPS output.

What the three PS5 modes change

The figures above come from Rockstar's PS5 launch specifications and Digital Foundry's PS5 analysis, also covered by Eurogamer.pl. Rockstar describes the rates as targets. The native PS5 edition launched on March 15, 2022; these choices do not describe the PS4 edition running on a PS5.

Fidelity uses native 4K and a 30 FPS target. Performance uses 1440p upscaled to 4K at 60 FPS. Performance RT keeps that 1440p base and 60 FPS target, then adds ray-traced sun shadows. It is the useful middle ground if you want the shadows without halving the game rate.

The word RT can cause confusion here. The December 2022 patch added ray-traced reflections specifically to Fidelity. You can see reflected characters in windows and objects in puddles; Performance RT does not inherit those reflections just because it has RT in the name. The Verge's report covers that distinction.

Fidelity is worth trying when you want to walk around Los Santos and inspect the patched reflections. For an HSW time trial or a fast turn through traffic, I would take Performance RT's quicker response instead.

Stream Performance RT before adding frames

Start with a 60 FPS stream and no app frame generation. That gives you the console's actual frame cadence, which matters when you brake late or make a small steering correction. Local streaming is free with a PlayRoam account, on PS5 or PS4; you still need the PS5 game edition for the modes listed here.

On a 120 Hz or faster screen, Pro generation inserts a frame between each pair of received frames. The 60 → 120 result can make a camera pan across traffic look smoother. It does not make the PS5 simulate cars at 120 FPS or sample your controls twice as often. Expect roughly 8 ms of added delay plus processing at a 60 FPS input, and check the measured Added delay.

For races or precise aiming, compare the same section with generation off. A smoother picture is a preference, not proof of quicker controls. PS5 frame generation explained separates those two things.

Fidelity is the alternative on any 60 Hz screen: stream at 30 FPS and use generation for 30 → 60 FPS motion. Its controls remain at 30 FPS and generation adds roughly 17 ms plus processing. Red Dead Redemption 2 is another Rockstar game where the console's real rate matters more than the display counter.

Windows settings for Los Santos

Select Performance RT in GTA 5, then use these launcher settings:

  • Choose Source → Local network at home, or Source → Over the internet for Pro internet play on PS5.
  • Set Resolution to 1080p and Frame rate to 60 FPS.
  • On a 120 Hz or faster screen, select FPS boost → 2× FSR in the Picture tab if you want generated motion. It requires Pro and works on any DirectX 11 graphics card.
  • Try Upscaling → FSR 1 for a 1440p or 4K monitor. It sharpens the 1080p stream; it does not turn that stream into the console's original 4K picture.
  • Check the output card for the chosen result, then compare Added delay while driving.

Remote Play tops out at 1080p60, using H.264 without HDR. Raising the monitor resolution cannot recover details the video never carried. If you are planning for the next game, GTA 6's page covers its separate console targets rather than carrying GTA 5's modes forward.

Driving on your phone

A 60 FPS Performance RT stream makes sense on a 60 Hz phone without generation. With Pro, supported hardware and a 120 Hz screen, Android tries 60 → 120 and tells you if the phone cannot keep up. The reliable generation fallback is a 30 FPS stream for 30 → 60, with a Vulkan 1.3 graphics chip. Select Fidelity if you make that switch, rather than discard half of Performance RT's frames.

Any gamepad Android recognises works. Touch controls are editable; use Fit to keep the full picture or Fill if you prefer to cover a wide screen. Before a time trial, test your steering with generation off.

Questions and answers

Is GTA 5 60 FPS on PS5?

The native PS5 version has Performance and Performance RT modes targeting 60 FPS. Fidelity targets 30 FPS. You need the PS5 version, rather than the older PS4 version running through backward compatibility, for these mode choices.

What is the difference between Performance and Performance RT in GTA 5?

Both use a 1440p image upscaled to 4K and target 60 FPS. Performance RT adds ray-traced shadows. Fidelity's ray-traced reflections are a separate feature and are not included in Performance RT.

Can GTA 5 run at 120 FPS on PS5?

These PS5 graphics modes do not offer a native 120 FPS option. PlayRoam Pro can display a 60 FPS stream with 120 FPS motion on a 120 Hz or faster screen, while the console and inputs remain at 60 FPS.

Can I stream my PS5 copy of GTA 5 to Android?

Yes. Local Remote Play is free with a PlayRoam account. Pro adds internet play for PS5 and frame generation on supported Android hardware. This streams your console copy, rather than running GTA 5 on the phone.

Try PlayRoam on your screen

Play your PS5 or PS4 at home free on Windows or Android. Pro makes your picture sharper and movement smoother, and adds PS5 play away from home.
