Returnal targets 60 FPS on PS5 in a single graphics configuration, with occasional drops rather than a separate 30 FPS Quality mode. Choose a 60 FPS stream in PlayRoam. You can keep those real game frames for combat or, with Pro and a 120 Hz or faster screen, try 60 → 120 FPS motion. PS5 Pro improves the source picture but retains the 60 FPS target.
Returnal's 4K output starts below 4K
The mode figures come from Digital Foundry's May 2025 PS5 Pro analysis, with the original pipeline also covered in Wccftech's launch report.
On the regular PS5, Returnal renders at 1080p internally. Housemarque reconstructs that to 1440p, then uses checkerboard rendering for 4K output. Calling it native 4K would hide how the picture is built. The reconstruction can leave fine detail looking grainy even though the console sends a 4K image to a TV.
The game generally reaches 60 FPS, but Digital Foundry found drops during the first biome's boss fight and large Tower of Sisyphus battles. Traversal can also hitch. A 60 FPS stream is the right match for the target, not a promise that every received frame will be unique and evenly spaced.
What the April 2025 Pro patch changes
Housemarque released the Pro update on April 30, 2025, Returnal's fourth anniversary. It introduced dynamic internal resolution on Pro. Digital Foundry observed 2400 by 1350 at the low end and 3072 by 1728 at the high end, with reconstructed 4K output. Those are measured samples, not guaranteed bounds for every random room or later battle.
The tested boss and Tower encounters held 60 FPS more consistently on Pro, but traversal stutters remained. The analysis also found some brief hitches when attacks struck enemies. The patch did not add a 120 Hz console mode or a menu of graphics presets.
A sharper Pro source can make PlayRoam's 1080p picture look cleaner. Don't buy Pro expecting a 4K Remote Play stream, though: PlayRoam receives at most 1080p60 H.264 video. Upscaling on your device doesn't recover all the detail in the console's original output.
Dodge first, judge smoothness second
Returnal's bullet-hell combat asks you to read a moving field of projectiles while controlling Selene. Keep the real 60 FPS source. For the Tower's combat-focused climb, start without generation so you can judge the stream's response before adding another delay.
Pro generation inserts a frame between every two received frames. A 120 Hz or faster screen can show the resulting 60 → 120 motion, while the game, physics and inputs stay at the console's real rate. Generation adds roughly 8 ms plus processing time at 60 FPS. Check Added delay for the measured cost.
If a dodge feels late, compare with generation disabled. Source drops still matter: doubling an uneven stream doesn't turn it into a locked console mode. Reducing Remote Play lag can matter more than raising the displayed frame count. Demon's Souls offers a different choice because it has an actual 30 FPS mode; Returnal doesn't.
Windows settings for a run
Use Source → Local network at home, Resolution 1080p and Frame rate 60 FPS. Local play is free with a PlayRoam account. For a PS5 session away from home, select Source → Over the internet with Pro.
On a 120 Hz or faster monitor, try FPS boost → 2× FSR in the Picture tab. It requires Pro and works on any DirectX 11 graphics card. Keep generation disabled on a 60 Hz display. For a 1440p or 4K monitor, Upscaling → FSR 1 gives the 1080p picture a sharper presentation, not a native-resolution reconstruction of Returnal.
On a 120 Hz phone
Start with a 60 FPS stream and a gamepad Android recognises. Pro generation tries 60 → 120 on a 120 Hz phone and tells you if the phone cannot keep up. A 30 FPS stream for 30 → 60 is the reliable fallback on a Vulkan 1.3 chip, but it sacrifices source frames and adds roughly 17 ms plus processing. Read Android frame generation before choosing that trade. Use Fit if Fill would crop the edge of the game picture during a crowded fight.
Questions and answers
Is Returnal 60 FPS on PS5?
Returnal targets 60 FPS in its single graphics configuration. It generally reaches that target, but heavy combat and some traversal can cause drops or short hitches.
Does Returnal have a Quality or Performance mode?
No. On PS5 and PS5 Pro, Returnal has one graphics configuration rather than a selectable 30 FPS Quality mode and 60 FPS Performance mode.
What resolution is Returnal on PS5 Pro?
Digital Foundry observed dynamic internal resolution from 1350p to 1728p after the April 2025 Pro update, reconstructed to 4K output. Those measurements are not a guaranteed minimum in every scene.
Does Returnal have a 120 FPS console mode?
No. The PS5 Pro update keeps the 60 FPS target. PlayRoam Pro can display a 60 FPS stream with 120 FPS motion on a 120 Hz or faster screen, without increasing the console frame rate.
Is frame generation a good choice for Returnal combat?
Try it, but compare with the ordinary 60 FPS stream. Generation adds about 8 ms plus processing time at 60 FPS, which can matter when you dodge through bullet patterns.
