Play PS5 on your laptop with Remote Play or a capture card
By the PlayRoam team · Updated October 9, 2026 · 4 min read
You can play PS5 on a laptop through Remote Play or a USB capture card, but plugging the console straight into most laptop HDMI ports will not show a picture. PlayRoam offers free home Remote Play on Windows and a Pro capture card mode for local HDMI. Start with Remote Play if you want to use the screen you already own without buying another device.
Why your laptop's HDMI port does nothing
An HDMI output sends the laptop's picture to another display. Your PS5 also sends a picture out, so connecting the two outputs does not make the laptop a monitor. Dell's HDMI guide identifies its laptop ports as HDMI Out and separates them from the HDMI In ports on displays and capture devices.
Check your own model's manual before buying cables. You need an actual HDMI input to receive the PS5 signal directly. A capture card solves this by receiving HDMI itself, then delivering the picture to Windows over USB.
Use Remote Play without a capture card
For PlayRoam, your laptop needs Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, and a DirectX 11 graphics card. Home-network play is free with an account. The laptop still needs internet for a license check every five minutes, even when the stream stays inside your home.
The console runs the game. Your laptop receives H.264 video at 720p or 1080p and 30 or 60 FPS, with no HDR. Choose the stream frame rate to match your game.
- Connect your PS5 and laptop to the same home network using Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Keep the PS5 awake while you link it.
- On PS5, open Settings → System → Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play. Choose Pair Device to display its code.
- In PlayRoam, sign in to your account and choose Source → Local network. Select the console, press Link and sign in to PlayStation Network if asked. Enter the console's number in 8-digit code, then press Link.
- Connect a supported controller to the laptop. Set Resolution to 1080p, choose 60 FPS under Frame rate for a 60 FPS game, and leave picture processing off initially.
- Choose Fit under Fit to screen, then press Start. Use F11 for Full screen once you can see the console.
The Windows Remote Play setup guide covers the full first session and PS4 pairing. If Wi-Fi stutters, use the stream settings guide to work down from 1080p60, which requests 30 Mbps, to a lighter 720p stream.
Use a capture card for a local HDMI picture
Choose this route when the PS5 is close enough to cable to your laptop and you want the picture to arrive through a capture device rather than Remote Play. It needs a USB capture card and PlayRoam Pro on Windows. The mode accepts Windows capture devices; the resolutions and frame rates you can select come from the card.
- Follow your capture card manufacturer's PS5 setup instructions. For an Elgato card, first connect the PS5 to a display and turn off Enable HDCP under Settings → System. Elgato explains that HDCP blocks capture.
- Connect the PS5's HDMI cable to the card's HDMI input, then connect the card to your laptop over USB. Use the USB connection required by that card.
- In PlayRoam, choose Source → Capture card and select it under Device. If the list is empty, plug the card in and press Refresh.
- Check Resolution and Frame rate before pressing Start. The default is the largest 16:9 mode that fits your display, at the rate nearest 60 FPS. Check Sound → From if you get a picture without audio.
You can keep your controller connected directly to the console. To use one through the laptop instead, link the console and choose it under Controller → Play on. That option sends controls through Remote Play while picture and sound stay on the card. The PC controller guide explains supported controllers.
Decide before buying hardware
Remote Play is the free option for playing elsewhere in the house without an HDMI cable to your laptop. With Pro, Upscaling → FSR 1 sharpens the stream as it scales to your display. Capture card mode gives you a local HDMI picture through the card's available modes instead.
Capture card mode can pass HDR10 to your screen when the card supplies a supported HDR signal and Windows HDR is on. It also offers PlayRoam's picture tools, subject to the signal: frame generation needs an uncompressed SDR NV12 mode, and HDR is off while FPS boost is on. Read the capture card picture settings guide before choosing a card for those features.
Pro is $10 per month and covers Windows and Android, although capture card mode is Windows only. PlayRoam's Added delay measures from the card handing over a frame to its display; the card's own capture latency comes before that measurement.
Questions and answers
Can I use my laptop as a monitor for PS5 with HDMI?
Usually not by connecting the PS5 directly. Most laptop HDMI ports send video out rather than receive it; check your model's manual for an HDMI input.
How can I play PS5 on a laptop without a capture card?
Use Remote Play over your home network. PlayRoam's home Remote Play is free with an account on a supported Windows laptop, but it still needs internet access for its license checks.
Can I play PS5 on a laptop without Remote Play?
Yes, with a USB capture card that receives the PS5's HDMI picture. PlayRoam's capture card mode needs Pro on Windows; its optional Controller → Play on route still uses Remote Play for controller input.
Can I play PS5 on my laptop without HDMI?
Yes. Remote Play sends the picture over Wi-Fi or Ethernet instead of an HDMI cable to the laptop. PlayRoam receives up to a 1080p SDR stream.
