PS Remote Play best settings: choose a clear, steady stream

By the PlayRoam team · Updated October 9, 2026 · 4 min read

Start with 1080p, match Remote Play's frame rate to your game's 30 or 60 FPS mode, and connect your PS5 by Ethernet. In PlayRoam, Smoothing steadies video through short network stalls, while Pro adds sharper scaling with FSR 1 and doubled displayed motion with FPS boost. Home-network Remote Play is free with an account.

Set the console and network first

Sony's setup guide gives the PS5 menu path. Its connection guides recommend wired connections, 5 GHz Wi-Fi and pausing downloads on other devices. Those are the network changes to try before chasing a special router preset.

  1. On your PS5, open Settings → System → Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
  2. Connect the PS5 to your router with Ethernet. If your PC can also use Ethernet, use it; otherwise connect your PC or Android device to 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  3. Pause competing downloads, as Sony recommends. For rest-mode starts, open Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network.

Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and download for a better Remote Play experience. PlayRoam's 1080p60 setting requests 30 Mbps of video, so choose a stream setting that fits your connection, especially away from home.

Match Windows settings to the game

Choose the console's graphics mode before choosing the stream rate. Check the mode details on our Spider-Man 2 page, Red Dead Redemption 2 page or God of War Ragnarök page. Use the actual mode's frame rate, rather than assuming every game runs at 60 FPS.

For a 30 FPS mode, request 30 FPS. For a 60 FPS mode, request 60 FPS to keep that motion in the stream. Pro's 2× FSR turns a 30 FPS stream into 60 FPS motion on any DirectX 11 graphics card.

  1. In PlayRoam, choose Source → Local network at home. Keep the console awake for the first link, press Link, sign in to PSN if asked, and enter the 8-digit code from the PS5's Pair Device screen.
  2. Set Resolution to 1080p if your connection can sustain it. Choose 720p when you need a lower video request.
  3. Set Frame rate to 30 FPS or 60 FPS to match the game mode.
  4. Start with Smoothing off if response matters most. Turn it on if short network stalls spoil the picture and you accept the extra hold, up to 0.2 seconds on Windows.
  5. For a 1440p or 4K monitor, choose Picture → Upscaling → FSR 1. It needs Pro and any DirectX 11 graphics card.
  6. Under FPS boost, choose Off to keep the source frames, or a Pro option supported by your graphics card. Use 2× FSR on any DirectX 11 card, 2× AI on NVIDIA RTX, or 2× hybrid on an NVIDIA card with Optical Flow. AI and hybrid options also depend on the app build including their runtimes.
  7. Check the output card's Incoming, On screen and Added delay readouts. Use F11 for full screen and Tab to return to settings during play.

Know the video request

PlayRoam sets the requested bitrate from resolution and frame rate. There is no bitrate slider to tune separately.

Stream settingRequested video bitrate
1080p at 60 FPS30 Mbps
1080p at 30 FPS20 Mbps
720p at 60 FPS15 Mbps
720p at 30 FPS10 Mbps

The console may send less. If the picture keeps breaking up, lowering the request is more useful than sharpening the damaged frames. Our Remote Play lag guide covers that diagnosis.

Each boost option inserts a frame between every two real frames. A 30 FPS stream can show 60 FPS motion on a 60 Hz screen; 60 → 120 needs a 120 Hz or faster screen. The estimate is about +17 ms at 30 FPS or +8.3 ms at 60 FPS, plus processing. Your game and inputs stay at the console's frame rate.

Remote Play tops out at 1080p, so FSR 1 scales and sharpens the received picture for your larger screen. Source detail and compression still set the limit. The 4K Remote Play guide explains the output card's Full HD → 2K headline.

Use the Android equivalents

  1. Choose Home network, link your console, and use Quality to choose the stream resolution and frame rate. The requested bitrates above apply on Android too.
  2. In the stream menu, choose Picture → Fit to keep the whole picture or Fill to crop it to the screen. You can also toggle Smoothing.
  3. With Pro and a Vulkan 1.3 graphics chip, try FSR upscaling and Frame generation. Android uses an on/off generation control, not the Windows graphics-card options.

The Android frame-generation guide explains the display and GPU limits. The app tries 60 → 120 and tells you when the phone cannot keep up; it may suggest streaming at 30 FPS. Pro costs $10/month and covers Windows and Android.

Questions and answers

What are the best PS Remote Play settings on PC?

Start with 1080p and match the stream to your game's 30 or 60 FPS mode. In PlayRoam, use Smoothing only when you prefer steadier video over the extra delay, then try Pro's FSR 1 or FPS boost for your screen.

How do I make PS Remote Play better quality?

Use a wired console connection and 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet for your playing device. PlayRoam can request 1080p and sharpen it with Pro's FSR 1, but Remote Play cannot deliver a native 4K picture.

What router settings should I use for PS Remote Play?

Start with Sony's advice to use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, a wired connection where possible, and paused competing downloads. This checklist does not require a port-forwarding rule or a change to router security settings.

What bitrate does PlayRoam use for 1080p60?

PlayRoam requests 30 Mbps for 1080p60, 20 Mbps for 1080p30, 15 Mbps for 720p60 and 10 Mbps for 720p30. The console may send less, and there is no separate bitrate slider.
