Play your PS5 remotely over the internet

Updated October 3, 2026 · 3 min read

You can play your PS5 from anywhere with a good connection: a friend's place, a hotel, the office after hours. The console stays at home in rest mode; PlayRoam wakes it, connects through PlayStation Network and streams it to your PC, with upscaling and frame generation as usual.

What you need

  • The PS5 on a wired connection at home. The console's upload speed decides your picture quality.
  • Enough bandwidth on both ends. Sony requires at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps or more, upload at home and download where you play.
  • Rest mode set up for remote wake. Under Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode, turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network.
  • Remote Play enabled: Settings → System → Remote Play → Enable Remote Play.

How the connection works

When you're away, your PC and the console can't see each other directly. PlayStation Network acts as the go-between: it helps both sides find each other and open a direct connection through their routers, the same way Sony's own Remote Play app does. Once connected, the game stream flows straight between the console and your PC.

Two limits come from PlayStation itself: remote connections work over IPv4 only, and some network types don't allow the direct connection to open.

Set it up in PlayRoam

  1. Before you leave, connect once on your home network with Local network to make sure everything works.
  2. Away from home, choose Over the internet and pick your console.
  3. Turn on Wake console so PlayRoam starts the PS5 from rest mode.
  4. Start at 720p on an unfamiliar connection; switch to 1080p if the picture stays clean.
  5. Match the stream's frame rate to the game: 30 fps for 30 FPS modes, 60 fps for 60 FPS modes. Frame generation doubles it on your side.
  6. Press Start.

When the connection fails

If PlayRoam can't reach the console, a router on one side is usually blocking the direct connection.

  • Turn on UPnP on your home router so it can open the ports Remote Play needs.
  • Forward the ports manually if your router has no UPnP. On a PS5, Remote Play uses TCP/UDP 9295 and UDP 9296, 9297 and 9302. Reserve a fixed local IP address for the console first so the rule keeps working.
  • Check for carrier-grade NAT. If your router's WAN address differs from the one shown on a "what is my IP" site, your provider shares one public address among customers and port forwarding won't help. Ask the provider for a public IPv4 address.
  • Try another network where you are. Some hotel and office networks block peer-to-peer traffic entirely.

Getting the best picture away from home

  • Distance adds latency you can't remove; a console in the same city feels far better than one across an ocean.
  • Close downloads and cloud backups at home while you play; they compete with the console's upload.
  • Turn frame generation off for fast competitive games; over the internet every millisecond counts. More in how to reduce PS5 Remote Play lag.

Frequently asked questions

How fast does my internet need to be to play my PS5 remotely?

Sony requires at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps or more, both for upload at the console's location and download where you play.

Do I need to leave my PS5 on?

No. Leave it in rest mode with Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network turned on, and PlayRoam can wake it.

Why can't I connect to my PS5 from outside my home?

The usual cause is a network that blocks direct connections, such as a strict NAT or carrier-grade NAT at your provider. Enabling UPnP or forwarding the Remote Play ports on the home router fixes most cases.

Does playing remotely use a lot of mobile data?

Yes. A 1080p stream uses far more data than video calls. On mobile data, stream at 720p and watch your allowance.
