Which controllers work with Remote Play on Android?

Updated October 8, 2026 · 3 min read

You don't need a PlayStation-branded controller to use PlayRoam on Android. Any gamepad Android recognises can provide the normal sticks, buttons, triggers and D-pad. That includes Xbox, DualSense, DualShock 4 and Android phone controllers such as Backbone, Razer Kishi and GameSir.

What Sony's Android app supports

Sony's official PS Remote Play listing names these controllers:

ControllerSony's listed Android requirement
DualShock 4Android 11+ app requirement
DualSenseAndroid 12+
DualSense EdgeAndroid 14+
Backbone One PlayStation EditionUSB-C Android smartphones

The official app needs Android 11+ and lists Pixel 8, 9 and 10 families as verified devices. Sony's separate Android TV app requires Android TV OS 12+ and a DualSense or DualShock 4. These are Sony's requirements, not PlayRoam's.

How PlayRoam maps the buttons

PlayRoam needs Android 8.0+ for basic streaming and gamepad input. Pair a Bluetooth controller in Android settings, or attach an Android-compatible USB controller, before starting the stream.

Face buttons map by position, not by the letter printed on the plastic:

PositionXbox labelPlayStation action
BottomACross
RightBCircle
LeftXSquare
TopYTriangle

The D-pad keeps its directions. Shoulder buttons map to L1/R1, triggers to L2/R2 and stick clicks to L3/R3. PlayRoam maps Back to Circle, useful for leaving a game menu rather than treating it as a PS button. If labels look unfamiliar, follow the position shown in the game prompt.

Test both sticks, each trigger and the D-pad in a game before relying on a new controller. Android must expose those inputs correctly; an unusual device driver can still be a problem.

Rumble and DualSense limits

Controller rumble is a Free feature on Android 12+, when the controller and Android driver support vibration. It is ordinary rumble, not a promise of the PS5's full haptic experience.

PlayRoam on Android has no gyro, touchpad surface or adaptive triggers, including when you connect a DualSense or DualSense Edge. It also has no keyboard/mouse input. Don't choose a controller expecting those features from the Android app.

Phone clips and telescopic controllers

A clip lets you reuse an Xbox or PlayStation pad and mounts the phone above it. Check the grip against your phone's size and weight; it can become top-heavy.

Backbone, Razer Kishi and GameSir models that grip the phone at both ends make a more compact handheld setup. Buy an Android-compatible model, not just a familiar brand name. Check USB-C or Bluetooth support, room for the camera bump and whether the connector reaches through your case. A controller doesn't add frame generation support: that depends on the phone's Vulkan 1.3 GPU and Pro.

Android handhelds, tablets and TVs

The same Android-recognised gamepad rule applies to a handheld's built-in controls. A Windows handheld uses the Windows app instead. On a tablet, a separate Bluetooth or USB controller often makes more sense than a grip sized for a phone.

PlayRoam works on Android TV with a gamepad, but the interface is basic. FSR upscaling can help on a large screen if the device has a Vulkan 1.3 GPU and Pro; it doesn't raise the console stream above 1080p.

If you don't have a controller

Free includes PlayStation, Xbox and Custom on-screen layouts. Move, hide or resize controls from 0.6 to 1.6 times their size, adjust opacity and use auto-hide. For games with precise timing, a physical pad leaves the picture clearer and gives you tactile controls.

Use Fit or Fill to choose how the picture occupies the screen. Start with the Android setup guide, or read Android frame generation before turning on picture processing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an Xbox controller for PS5 Remote Play on Android?

With PlayRoam, yes, if Android recognises it as a gamepad. Face buttons map by position to the PlayStation layout. Sony's official Android app lists a narrower set of supported controllers.

Do Backbone, Razer Kishi and GameSir controllers work?

PlayRoam accepts them when Android recognises them as gamepads. Check the controller's Android support, connector, phone dimensions and case clearance before buying.

Does PlayRoam have controller rumble on Android?

Rumble is supported on Android 12 or later with a compatible controller. Android recognition alone does not guarantee that a particular controller exposes vibration.

Does DualSense give me adaptive triggers and gyro on Android?

No. PlayRoam's Android app has ordinary gamepad controls and supported rumble, but no gyro, touchpad surface or adaptive triggers. Those Android limits also apply to DualSense.
