PS Remote Play not working on PC? Start here

By the PlayRoam team · Updated October 9, 2026 · 4 min read

If PS Remote Play is not working on PC, check console setup and account sign-in first, then follow the fix for your symptom: connection failure, Windows crash or controller input. Windows 11 N also needs attention to its missing media components. PlayRoam offers another Windows client with free home streaming, Xbox controller support and live stats to help you tune the connection.

When the app cannot find or connect to your PS5

Sony's Remote Play setup page lists Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, with a seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later. Check its full requirements if this PC has never run the app successfully.

  1. Turn on the PS5. Open Settings → System → Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play for the user you want to stream.
  2. In PS Remote Play, select Sign In and use the same PlayStation account as on the console. Sign out and back in if the app has been unused for a while.
  3. Update the console software and PS Remote Play. Restart the app and PC before retrying.
  4. On the PS5, open Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection. Check that the console can reach the internet.
  5. If automatic discovery still fails, put the PC and PS5 on the same network. On the console, open Settings → System → Remote Play → Pair Device, then enter the displayed number when the PC app asks for manual registration.

For a console in rest mode, Sony requires Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network under Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn it on manually for this test so you can separate a wake problem from a connection problem.

The pair-device guide covers PlayRoam's own linking flow, with its Link button and 8-digit code field.

When NAT type fails or only outside play fails

In Sony's Windows app, open Settings → Information to check NAT type. Sony warns that NAT Type 3, or an unavailable NAT type, can prevent Remote Play. Check this result alongside your connection speed.

Sony's connection troubleshooting instructions identify UDP port 8572 for PS Remote Play and suggest opening it on the router. Ask your ISP or router manufacturer for help with their settings.

Check whether security software blocks the app and use an app-specific firewall exception if needed. Avoid leaving the firewall disabled. Test at home, then from a second network if the failure happens only away. If the NAT result still fails, take that result to the ISP or mobile carrier rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.

When it crashes or will not open on Windows 11

Sony suggests restarting the PC, removing the PS Remote Play folder in local AppData and reinstalling the app for crashes. It also says reinstalling the latest supported x86 Visual C++ runtime may help. Use the Microsoft runtime link on Sony's support page; x86 is the version Sony specifies even on a 64-bit PC.

For a blank picture, Sony recommends reinstalling the app and checking the graphics-card manufacturer's latest driver.

Check Windows N before chasing network settings

Microsoft explains that Windows 10 N and Windows 11 N omit media technologies, including Media Foundation and codec components. If your Windows edition ends in N, restore those components with the Media Feature Pack, then retry the app.

  1. On Windows 11 N, open Settings → Apps → Optional features.
  2. Select View features beside Add an optional feature. Find and install Media Feature Pack.
  3. Restart the PC, even if Windows does not prompt you. Microsoft says the restart is required to complete installation.

The Media Feature Pack applies to Windows N editions. Ordinary Windows 11 Home and Pro already include those media technologies.

When the controller is not recognized

Sony's PC instructions list DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 with a USB connection. Start with that documented setup. Try another USB cable or port if the controller does not connect, then restart the PC. Sony's troubleshooting page also recommends resetting the controller and checking current DualSense or DualSense Edge firmware.

Sony's listed Windows setup uses PlayStation controllers. For an Xbox pad, PlayRoam supports Xbox/XInput input directly.

Try PlayRoam's free home path

PlayRoam's Windows home-network Remote Play is free with an account for PS5 and PS4. This is the home workflow in the PlayRoam app:

  1. Choose Source → Local network with the console awake and Remote Play enabled.
  2. Select the console's Link button, sign in to PSN if asked and enter the 8-digit code from the console's pairing screen.
  3. Start with Resolution → 720p and Frame rate → 30 FPS, then start the stream and test your controller.
  4. Read Packet loss, Bitrate and Lost frames in the Windows overlay before raising stream quality.

PlayRoam supports Xbox/XInput controllers and DualSense or DualSense Edge over USB or Bluetooth on Windows. Its Smoothing setting holds the picture back up to 0.2 seconds to even out network stalls, so you can trade quicker response for a steadier picture. With Pro, FPS boost → 2× FSR turns a 30 FPS stream into 60 FPS motion on any DirectX 11 graphics card. It adds about 17 ms at that source rate, plus processing; the game and inputs stay at the console's frame rate.

Follow the Windows setup guide for the full flow, or the PC controller guide for supported input. If a connected stream feels slow, the lag guide explains the readouts. Pro internet mode is PS5-only and uses a direct IPv4 connection without a relay. If a network blocks it, test another network or ask your provider about restrictions.

Questions and answers
