How much data does PS5 Remote Play use?
Updated October 8, 2026 · 2 min read
Sony says Remote Play "uses a lot more data than most video streaming services". That matters on a mobile allowance: a long gaming session can consume several gigabytes even at 720p. Here are the numbers behind PlayRoam's quality choices.
Data per hour by stream quality
PlayRoam requests these video bitrates. The hourly figures assume that requested rate is sent continuously, so they are upper-bound estimates for the requested video bitrate, not measurements of every session.
| Stream quality | Requested video bitrate | Video data per hour, up to |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 60 FPS | 30 Mb/s | 13.5 GB |
| 1080p, 30 FPS | 20 Mb/s | 9 GB |
| 720p, 60 FPS | 15 Mb/s | 6.75 GB |
| 720p, 30 FPS | 10 Mb/s | 4.5 GB |
The calculation is Mb/s × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 = decimal GB per hour. At 30 Mb/s, that is 13.5 GB. Half an hour at the same rate is 6.75 GB.
The console may send less than requested. Scene complexity, encoder behaviour and network conditions affect the actual stream. Audio, packet overhead and other traffic are not included in the table, so it isn't a hard cap on your carrier's bill. Check Android's measured usage and your provider's counter.
Choose quality for the game, not just the allowance
For a game rendering 30 FPS, choose a 30 FPS stream. A 60 FPS stream just repeats its frames and requests more bandwidth. With Pro on a Vulkan 1.3 phone, frame generation can turn the received 30 FPS stream into 60 FPS motion locally without sending extra frames over the network.
For a genuine 60 FPS performance mode, use a 60 FPS stream if the connection and allowance permit it. 720p60 requests less bandwidth than 1080p30, but trades source detail for smoother real motion. Lower resolution doesn't remove latency from the game or the network.
Avoid a surprise mobile bill
- Start with 720p30 on a limited plan. Raise quality only after checking actual usage.
- Use home Wi-Fi when possible. A local console stream stays on the LAN, though PlayRoam still needs internet for license checks every five minutes.
- Set a mobile-data warning or limit in Android settings and check how your carrier counts traffic. Don't assume an "unlimited" plan has no speed or fair-use limit.
- Test a short session before travelling. Multiply its measured usage by the time you intend to play, leaving room for other phone traffic.
- Prefer a stable connection over a high setting that loses packets. Connection stats in PlayRoam help identify a weak network.
Away from home has other requirements
PlayRoam's internet mode is Pro, PS5 only, through PSN over IPv4. It needs no port forwarding, but strict carrier NAT and some hotel or office networks can block the direct connection. There is no relay to bypass them. Adequate mobile bandwidth alone doesn't guarantee a connection.
The console's upload and your device's download both matter. Sony recommends at least 5 Mb/s and 15 Mb/s or more for best performance; PlayRoam's higher requested bitrates above need corresponding headroom. See playing PS5 over the internet for setup, or Android setup for playing at home.
Frequently asked questions
How much data does PlayRoam request at 1080p 60 FPS?
It requests a video bitrate of 30 Mb/s, equivalent to up to 13.5 decimal GB per hour of video. The console may send less; audio and network overhead are outside that calculation.
Which setting uses the least mobile data?
720p at 30 FPS requests 10 Mb/s, equivalent to up to 4.5 GB per hour of video. Watch Android's mobile-data counter because total carrier usage can differ.
Does frame generation double the data usage?
No. Generated frames are made on your Android device or PC, not sent by the console. A 30 FPS stream remains a 30 FPS network stream when displayed at 60 FPS.
Does local Remote Play use my mobile allowance?
The local video stream stays on the home network, so it does not use mobile data when both devices are connected there. PlayRoam still needs internet access for its five-minute license checks.
