PS Remote Play, chiaki-ng, PXPlay and PlayRoam compared
By the PlayRoam team · Updated October 20, 2026 · 6 min read
For PS Remote Play on PC or Android, start with the app that supports your controller and the way you want to connect. Sony's official app is free, chiaki-ng is an open-source desktop option, and PXPlay is the paid app formerly called PSPlay. PlayRoam offers free home play on Windows and Android. Its Pro plan is coming soon, so do not choose it for paid features you need today.
This is a comparison of published features, not a latency benchmark. We checked the official pages and developer documentation linked below on October 20, 2026. PlayRoam publishes this guide, so its own limits matter as much as the alternatives' features.
Compare platforms and prices
Every option needs your own PS5 or PS4 and games. Remote Play sends the console's picture to another device; none of these apps installs PS5 games on a PC or supplies a cloud console.
| App | Platforms relevant to this comparison | Console support | Price checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official PS Remote Play | Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and supported Android TV devices | PS5 and PS4, at home or away | Free |
| chiaki-ng | Windows, Linux and macOS, including Linux handheld PCs | PS5 and PS4; documents local setup and remote connection through PSN | Free and open source |
| PXPlay, formerly PSPlay | Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and Android TV; also iOS and Apple TV | PS5 and PS4, local and internet connections | PC: €12.99 once. Android: $6.99 on the US Google Play listing. Separate platform purchases |
| PlayRoam | Windows and Android | Free PS5 and PS4 home play. Pro is planned for PS5 internet play only | Home play: $0 with an account. Pro: listed at $10/month, coming soon |
PXPlay's purchase page says one PC license covers Windows, Linux and macOS for personal use on multiple machines. Android requires its own purchase; the standalone APK also needs an Android license. The Google Play listing showed $6.99 in the US. Store prices, currency and taxes can differ, so check your own store before buying. The developer supplies PC demos.
PSPlay and PXPlay belong in the same row. The developer's manual says PSPlay was renamed PXPlay. Buying both names does not get you two different clients.
Compare resolution and FPS limits
For PS5 Remote Play, plan around a source stream of up to 1080p at 60 FPS, not the console's HDMI output resolution. A game running at 30 FPS does not become a native 60 FPS game just because the stream setting says 60. Base PS4 is more limited than PS4 Pro, and connection quality can lower the delivered picture.
| App | Stream choices or limits | What a larger display changes |
|---|---|---|
| Official PS Remote Play | PS5 and PS4 Pro quality adjusts automatically. Sony lists 360p, 540p and 720p choices for base PS4; PS5 Remote Play is up to 1080p60 | Full screen enlarges the video; it does not turn it into a native 4K stream |
| chiaki-ng | Published presets include 360p through 1080p and 30/60 FPS. Documentation recommends 1080p for PS5, 720p for PS4 and 1080p for PS4 Pro | Its video and HDR options depend on your hardware and configuration |
| PXPlay / PSPlay | Developer-published PC and Android settings list 1080p for PS5/PS4 Pro, lower resolutions and 30/60 FPS | The advertised 2K/4K upscaling enlarges a lower-resolution stream; it is not 4K capture from the console |
| PlayRoam | Home settings offer 720p or 1080p and 30/60 FPS, without HDR. Console capabilities still limit the received stream | Planned Pro FSR 1 upscaling and generated 60/120 FPS motion process the picture on your device, not on the console |
The distinction matters when comparing marketing claims. PXPlay's published Android stream options explicitly mark 1080p as PS5/PS4 Pro only. chiaki-ng's configuration guide makes the same PS4 versus Pro distinction. A base PS4 does not acquire a 1080p source just because a client has a 1080p menu item.
HDR is another difference. Sony documents HDR Remote Play on Windows with compatible displays, the Microsoft HEVC extension and HDR enabled. chiaki-ng documents a PS5 H.265 HDR setup. PXPlay's published PC settings include HDR with HEVC and compatible rendering hardware. PlayRoam's Remote Play stream is SDR; its planned capture-card HDR passthrough is a separate Windows feature.
Read Remote Play quality settings for PlayRoam's stream requests and PS5 frame generation for the added-delay trade-off. Pro's generated frames would not reduce input lag or remove a game's console FPS cap.
Check your controller before choosing
| App | Controllers and controls | Limitation to check |
|---|---|---|
| Official PS Remote Play | DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 on supported systems; touch controls on phones | Sony's Windows instructions use USB. Android Bluetooth support varies by controller and Android version |
| chiaki-ng | Steam Deck controls, PlayStation pads and configurable controller mappings | The documented DualSense haptics route needs USB; adaptive triggers support USB or Bluetooth. Steam Input can interfere with native controller features |
| PXPlay / PSPlay | Compatible PC controllers and Android USB/Bluetooth controllers; mapping and editable Android touch layouts | Check your device's input support and the developer's mapping instructions rather than assuming every controller feature transfers |
| PlayRoam | Windows: DualSense, Edge and Xbox/XInput pads. Android: recognised gamepads or editable touch controls | Windows supports adaptive triggers, touchpad and motion but uses emulated rumble instead of native DualSense haptics. Microphones and voice chat are not supported |
Sony lists DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth support from Android 10 and DualSense from Android 12, with device-driver caveats. If you already own a supported PlayStation pad, the official app is a sensible first test. If you want an Xbox controller or more mapping choices, compare the other apps against the pad you own rather than buying a replacement immediately.
For the controls PlayRoam supports, use the PC controller guide or Android controller guide. Its free Android Fit and Fill modes can also help with full screen and black bars, but Fill crops game information at the edges.
Playing away from home is a separate decision
Sony's official app supports both PS5 and PS4 away from home without a client subscription. PXPlay documents automatic remote connection through PSN and a manual router-configuration route; its manual warns that automatic connections may not work on every network. chiaki-ng documents PSN setup, including signing in through a browser and supplying the redirect URL.
PlayRoam's free mode stays on your home network. Its planned Pro internet mode is PS5-only, uses a direct IPv4 connection through PSN and has no relay server. Strict carrier NAT or blocked networks can prevent a connection. Pro is coming soon, so choose another available client if you need internet play now.
No app can promise to fix a blocked network or an overloaded Wi-Fi link. Before leaving, enable Remote Play and rest-mode network wake, then test from a different network while you can still reach the console. Our internet setup guide explains the console settings and PlayRoam-specific limitations. For a connected stream that stutters, use the lag checklist before changing clients.
Choose for the setup you have
Try Sony's app first if you want a free official client with supported PlayStation controls, especially for internet play today. On Linux or a Steam Deck, chiaki-ng is a documented free desktop option. PXPlay is worth evaluating with its PC demo if you want its configurable picture and controller settings and prefer a one-time purchase; remember that Android is separate.
Choose PlayRoam for free PS5 or PS4 home play on Windows or Android when its controller support and screen options fit your needs. You need a free PlayRoam account and a PSN account. Internet access is required even at home for a license check every five minutes. The app is in English, and it does not support microphone input or voice chat. The Free and Pro comparison lists those limits and labels Pro as coming soon.
For a first session, follow PS5 Remote Play on Windows, Android setup or connecting PS5 to a laptop. Get a working home stream before spending money on picture processing or more hardware.
Questions and answers
Which PS Remote Play app should I use on PC?
Start with Sony's free app if you use a supported PlayStation controller and want official support. chiaki-ng is free and open source, PXPlay has a one-time PC license and a demo, and PlayRoam has free home play on Windows with DualSense or Xbox/XInput controllers.
Are PSPlay and PXPlay different apps?
PSPlay was renamed PXPlay. The developer identifies it as the same app, not a separate competitor. Its PC license covers Windows, Linux and macOS; Android is a separate purchase.
Can these apps stream PS5 in 4K or native 120 FPS?
Do not confuse an enlarged picture or generated frames with the console stream. The clients compared here use up to 1080p and 60 FPS for PS5 Remote Play. Upscaling cannot supply native 4K detail, and PlayRoam's planned Pro frame generation does not raise the console game's frame rate.
Is chiaki-ng available for Android?
The chiaki-ng installation guide lists Linux, Windows and macOS packages. Its repository also contains inherited Chiaki Android code, but that is not the same as a documented current Android release. This comparison treats chiaki-ng as a desktop option.
Is PlayRoam free, and can I buy Pro?
PlayRoam home-network play for PS5 and PS4 is free on Windows and Android with an account. Internet access is still needed for license checks every five minutes. Pro is coming soon and cannot be bought yet; its listed price is $10 per month.
